Automobiles and other motor vehicles are a common and necessary good used by millions of people every day. Automobiles are often the most efficient way for people to get from point A to point B whether they are running errands, commuting to work, attending a sporting event, exploring the world’s most beautiful countries, or visiting family and friends. Some countries are known for engineering and manufacturing automobiles. These countries are often among the world’s biggest producers of steel, as well as its most populous countries, but other countries lack the manufacturing infrastructure to meet the demand for automobiles, and instead opt to import them.

Top Car Producing Countries in the World (OICA 2023)

China is the world’s largest producer of vehicles, having manufactured about 26.1 million cars and 4 million commercial vehicles in 2023 for a total production of about 30.2 million vehicles. The largest domestic car manufacturers in China, known as the traditional “Big Four,” are SAIC Motor, Dongfeng, FAW, and Chang’an.

The United States is the second-largest car producer in the world, although it produces almost one-third of the number of cars China does – at 10.6 million units. About 1.7 million cars and 8.9 million commercial vehicles were manufactured in the United States in 2023. The United States’ largest car manufacturers, referred to as the “Big Three,” are General Motors, Ford Motor Company, and Fiat Chrysler.

The International Organization of Motor Vehicle Manufacturers (OICA)

The International Organization of Motor Vehicle Manufacturers (Organisation Internationale des Contructeurs d’Automobiles - OICA) was founded in Paris, France, in 1919. The organization’s purpose is to represent the interests of vehicle manufacturers, assemblers, and importers. It does this by linking the national automobile associations of member nations, studying issues of mutual interest related to the development and future of automobile manufacturing, and collecting and circulating useful information among members.

The OICA also establishes policies of mutual interest for members and represents the auto industry at the international level, in particular with intergovernmental and international bodies. Additionally, it disseminates and promotes industry policies and positions. The OICA consists of 35 members and is engaged in four categories of activities: exhibitions, technical, statistics, and communications.
